The world premiere of Odyssey, a powerful new music-drama for singers and orchestra composed by Jonathan Dove.

Drawing on first-hand accounts, this dramatically engaging story in song allows the audience to see through the eyes of one refugee on a perilous journey to seek safety in another country. As vivid snapshots of a peaceful home life turn to visceral images of unrest, together we travel through strange landscapes and across borders, and discover the courage it takes to leave loved ones and take desperate risks in order to survive.

The Tsar had his photograph taken | Scottish Opera Young Company

Directed by Roxana Haines.

The Company is hard at work rehearsing The Tsar Has His Photograph Taken. Heavily suppressed by the Nazis in the 1940s and only recently re-discovered, Kurt Weill's absurd operatic comedy asks just how dangerous a camera can be.

Planned for performances in Summer 2021 (subject to Scottish Government guidance on lifting restrictions), the show will see the Young Company back on stage for the first time in over two years.

Performance as part of the Lammermuir Festival. This production was premiered on film at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal on 29 November 2020.
